Asus’ ROG Phone 3 brings 5G and powerhouse performance for mobile gaming
After Qualcomm announced the amped-up Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset earlier this month, it was inevitable that a wave of new gaming phones would follow. The new ROG Phone 3 from Asus is one of the first to be unveiled. It brings support for 5G as well as powerful mobile gaming performance to consumers who don’t need to worry about a budget.
If you’re looking for a phone to play games on the go, it doesn’t get much better than the ROG Phone 3. Thanks to Qualcomm’s newest processor and a host of other features geared specifically towards mobile gaming, this handset is ready to deliver a tremendous experience.
Breaking Down the ROG Phone 3
For those serious about mobile gaming and those who want the best specs out there, the ROG Phone 3 won’t disappoint. The party starts with a 6.59-inch OLED HDR color-calibrated screen. It features an insane 144Hz refresh rate. That easily beats the 120Hz rate of most flagship phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S20. To make it even better, the ROG Phone 3’s screen has a minimal 1ms response time.
Inside, the phone runs on a Snapdragon 865 Plus chip. Qualcomm claims that the processor delivers boosted clock speeds of up to 3.1GHz and 10 percent faster graphics rendering than the typical 865 chip thanks to an Adreno 650 GPU.
The ROG Phone 3 will also support 5G thanks to the 865 Plus processor.
It can be configured with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 ROM storage. Both of those specs push the limits of what we’ve seen so far in a gaming phone.
Finally, the ROG Phone 3 features a massive 6,000mAh battery. That’s the same as last year’s model and powers its resource-heavy operations for hours upon hours.
Aside from performance specs, the ROG Phone 3 has plenty of design features to get excited about. For instance, like its predecessor, it has a side-mounted USB-C port for charging. Although the design is unconventional, it keeps the charging cable out of the way when playing in landscape mode.
The phone also boasts improvements to the ultrasonic AirTrigger pressure-sensitive touch sensors that are located around its edges. They mimic the experience of using a real controller. With its latest model, Asus is giving gamers better control over their experience with more customization options.
The new phone also features additional swipe gestures on each button that can be used to trigger a secondary command.
Enhancing the Experience
In typical fashion, Asus plans to release a handful of accessories that can help gamers get even more out of their experience. For one, there is the TwinView Dock 3 which lets you extend to another display for multitasking.
Since the phone is so powerful, there’s also a mobile desktop dock that lets you use the ROG Phone 3 with a keyboard and mouse. It’s a bit odd but could do in a pinch.
These accessories won’t come cheap, though. Nor will the other ones that Asus plans to release later in 2020 to complement its newest phone.
Speaking of, the ROG Phone 3 will launch in the United States this September. Though its official price hasn’t been announced, it will likely be around $1,000. Its predecessor cost $899.99, so a price bump wouldn’t be surprising.
